A happy team makes for even happier customers

They say that team work makes the dream work. At S.D.H. Plumbing & Heating, we work hard to serve customers like you, and we’ve grown exponentially as a result. Last year, we went from 4 to 15 team members. And as of July 2022, we’ve already welcomed four more.

We firmly believe that we’re better when we work and play together. That why we make it a priority to gather outside of work and spend some time relaxing with each other. During our inaugural summer outing, we headed up north to Maine’s beautiful Sebago Lake for some boating and other outside fun. This summer we’re looking forward to making even more memories.

We’re more like a family in the sense that we really enjoy each other’s company. And that, in turn, means we do a much better job of helping you and your families with your plumbing and heating needs. From all of us, we hope that all of you are able to enjoy some downtime and special moments now that the warmer weather has arrived. Whether you stay close to home in the Waltham, Newton, Belmont, and Watertown areas, or whether you choose to go farther afield, we wish you a terrific summer.

Preventive maintenance for your on-demand water heater, peace of mind for you

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure – especially when it comes to home ownership. Staying on top of small problems prevents them from snowballing into more serious and costly ones. But it’s even more important if you own an on-demand water heater.

As a matter of fact, the manufacturers of these sophisticated appliances actually require regular preventive maintenance. If you ignore this critical responsibility, you’ll void your warranty. Don’t make that costly mistake. Instead, call us so that we can set you up for regular maintenance.

We’ll flush your on-demand water heater with a special solution to prevent clogs, and we’ll make sure it’s operating properly. We’ll inspect it and check for any signs of corrosion, drips, or leaks. And we’ll ensure the entire thing is running at peak efficiency.

The result for you? Peace of mind and plenty of hot water.

If you own an on-demand water heater, you need preventive maintenance. Call us today and get on our schedule.

Don’t let little drips turn into big water bills

big water bills

Running toilets … dripping faucets … leaking shower heads … Chances are you’ve dealt with one of these in your home at some point. But did you know that these little annoyances can add up to big problems? It’s true: a constantly running toilet uses thousands of gallons of water each year – which costs you hundreds of extra dollars on your quarterly water and sewer bill (even more if your toilet is an older model).

And that dripping faucet of yours?  According to the Environment Protection Agency, a leaky faucet with one drip per second wastes more than 3,000 gallons per year — the amount of water needed to take more than 180 showers! That’s your money going down the drain.

Now’s the time to have us check for and replace leaking flappers, valves, washers, and gaskets. By having us come sooner rather than later, you’ll stop wasting water and save money on your bills. You’ll also take advantage of a month that is traditionally a slower time for plumbers (which means you won’t have to wait long for us to arrive and fix your problem).

With leak repairs – as with life – there’s no time like the present!

Let’s put an end to those leaks! Contact us now so we can fix them and save you money.

Getting Ready for Spring

Getting Ready for Spring

Before long, it’ll be time to think about green lawns and colorful flower gardens. As the days grow longer and warmer weather approaches the greater Waltham, Newton, Belmont, and Watertown areas, here are two things to do now.

Call your irrigation company. Do you have a sprinkler system for your lawn and flower beds? Now’s the time to get on your company’s calendar and make an appointment for your system’s spring checkup. That way you’ll be good to go for the spring, summer, and fall watering and growing seasons.

Make sure all hose connections to your house are working properly. Although your irrigation company maintains your sprinkler system, we’re the ones to call if you notice a problem with dripping outside faucets or with the connections from the sprinkler system to your house.

Don’t have a sprinkler system? We can add new outdoor faucet connections, to save you from dragging long, heavy garden hoses from one part of your lawn to another. We can also inspect your backflow if you need us to.

3 things to do to prepare for the rainy season

prepare for the rainy season

March is here, and that means rain – followed, of course, by what we New Englanders affectionately call “Mud Season.” If you live in a place where the water table is naturally high, here are three quick ways to prevent a basement flood that could cost you thousands of dollars to fix.

  1. Inspect your sump pump and all drains (including French drains if you have them). Make sure everything is in working order before the rain starts falling. And call us right away if it’s not.
  2. Consider putting a water alarm in your basement. Available at your local home improvement store, a water alarm is like a smoke detector, except it goes on the ground. The simplest ones have three contacts on the bottom – when rising water makes a connection with all three contacts, the alarm will start beeping to alert you.
  3. Add a battery-powered backup system to your sump pump. If you have a sump pump, and you’re in an area that’s especially vulnerable to water, a battery-based backup system is a smart idea. That’s because if you lose power during a storm and your sump pump goes out, you could be looking at some expensive basement flooding.

Whether you’re in Waltham, Newton, Belmont, Watertown or farther afield, being proactive now can help your basement stay dry this spring.

Prevent Plumbing Problems While You’re Away This Winter

Prevent Plumbing Problems

New Englanders know that February can be a bleak month – that’s why so many of us like to escape to warmer places this time of year. If you live in the greater Waltham, Newton, Belmont, and Watertown areas, maybe you’re already looking forward to that tropical vacation. But before you pack your bags and head out of town this winter, make sure you’re not coming home to plumbing problems.

Ask a trusted neighbor, friend, or relative to check on your house occasionally while you’re gone (don’t forget to leave them a key!). That person can stop by and turn up your heat if the weather at home turns bitter cold while you sit on a sunny beach with your umbrella drink. If a winter storm hits and knocks out your neighborhood’s power and heat, that neighbor, friend, or relative can call us. That way, we can prevent a frozen pipe situation in your house (don’t miss our related blog post about that situation).

Get a programmable thermostat that’s WiFi enabled. These smart thermostats let you keep an eye on the heat in your house even when you’re not there. They can also alert you to a no-heat situation (so you can ask that neighbor to swing by) and can provide valuable peace of mind when you’re away. Visit REBATES to learn more about the generous cash rebates you can qualify for when you purchase these helpful thermostats.

Take these simple steps now and enjoy a worry-free trip. And remember to pack your sunscreen!

4 Ways To Avoid Frozen Pipes This Winter

Avoid Frozen Pipes

Frozen pipes can be a homeowner’s worst nightmare – they can easily cause thousands of dollars’ worth of damage. When the forecast calls for chilly and windy weather, take these precautions and reduce the likelihood of a disaster in your home.

  1. Shut off all outside faucets.
  2. Disconnect all garden hoses from outside faucets and store them inside for the winter.
  3. If you’ve had frozen pipes in the past, consider leaving indoor faucets on a slow drip during a cold snap, especially if you’ll be away on vacation during the winter.
  4. During exceptionally cold weather, set the heat a little higher than you would normally have it.

But what if the worst has already happened, and you know you are dealing with a frozen pipe? Here are the two most important things you can do:

  1. Turn up your heat (as long as the pipe in question isn’t a heating line).
  2. Call us immediately. If that frozen pipe of yours has burst, we can find and repair it before it thaws and starts leaking water everywhere.

Whether you’re in Waltham, Newton, Belmont, Watertown – or any of the surrounding towns – we’ll get to your frozen pipe emergency quickly so you can get back to normal as soon as possible.

When should you have your boiler or heating system serviced?

When it comes to servicing your boiler or heating system, there’s no time like the present! Here in the greater Waltham, Newton, Belmont, and Watertown areas, the nights are getting cooler and fall is definitely in the air. Before long, you’ll be switching on the heat. Now’s the time to schedule a service visit for your boiler or heating system, so it will be ready to keep you warm and comfortable all winter long.

Why do it sooner rather than later? Scheduling your service now means we can get familiar with your boiler or heating system and make sure it’s fully operational and running at its best before you actually need to use it. And because we’ll be there during regular business hours, we can identify and repair any possible problems promptly—saving you from expensive emergency or “no heat” calls in the middle of a freezing winter’s night.

Depending on your specific boiler or heating system, your service visit might include pump inspection or filter replacement. If you have a gas system, we’ll check your gas pressure. No matter which kind of boiler or heating system you have—baseboard, radiator, registers that blow out air—we’ll clean, check, and tune it. And while we’re on the subject of service visits, remember to show your high-efficiency water heater a little love this fall, as well. If you own one of these high-end systems, the manufacturer usually requires a yearly maintenance flush-out and tune-up service.

So don’t wait for winter: schedule that service visit while the days are still long and keep your boiler or heating system running like new!
